Care Of Your Nose After The Operation

Noses heal more quickly if you douche frequently – at least six times a day. Most people begin with ‘FLO’ or ‘SINUS RINSE’ nasal spray (available over the counter at the chemist or wholesale ordering Mayne Code 286001). You will need to rinse your nose for several weeks. This is only a small pump bottle. If you run out of the solution from the hospital you can make up your own:
  • 1 litre of tap water
  • 2 teaspoons of salt
  • 1 heaped teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda (baking powder)
If you have had sinus surgery you must not blow your nose for seven days. Nose bleeding may cause swelling and bruising around the eyes. Steam inhalations in the 1st week post op can also cause bleeding and should be avoided for the 1st week post op. If you have had a septoplasty (an operation to straighten the midline partition in the nose so as to improve breathing), you will need to remove crusts at the front of your nose three times a day, with a cotton bud lubricated with K-Y Jelly or vaseline. Swimming is very good for noses after sinus or septal surgery but you must wait to have your splints removed first. A small amount of bloodstained discharge is normal after nose and sinus surgery. Do not take aspirin or Nurofen OR ALCOHOL (See General Instructions Prior to Surgery). These agents will thin your blood and create bleeding. Panadol and Panadeine are quite safe. If your nose begins to bleed and this does not settle with sitting quietly and ice (bag of frozen peas) over the nose, attend the Accident and Emergency Department of the closest major hospital.
